Tournament 2016 Updates
Men’s Singles
Novak Djokovic was the defending champion. He successfully defended his title defeating ANDY Murray 6-1, 7-5,7-6 (7-3) in a rematch of the previous year’s final. Djokovic also equaled ROY EMERSON’s all time men’s record of 6 Australian Open Singles titles. As a result of this victory, Djokovic now holds 11 grand slam titles and equaled ROD LAVER AND Bjorn Borg’s tally.
Australian Hewitt a 2005 Finalist , two 0time Grand Slam Champion and former no 1 played his last professional matches in both singles and doubles. In singles he lost to DAVID Ferrer in the second round and in doubles he lost in the 3rd round.


Women’s Singles Serena Williams was the defending champion but she lost in the final to ANGELIQUE KERBER 4-6, 6-3,4-6. Kerber became the first major champion to save a match point in the first round, which she did against MISAKI DOI, She is also the first GERMAN of any gender to win a major since STEFFI GRAF at the 1999 FRENCH OPEN. The twelve seed that lost in the opening round was the most in the opening round of any major tournament since the 32 seed draw was adapted at the 2001 WIMBLEDON CHAMPIONSHIPS.
Johanna Konta became the first British woman to reach the semi-final of a major since JO DURIE in 1983. ZHANG SHUAI became the 1st qualifier to reach the AUTRALIAN OPEN quarter-finals since ANGELICA GAVALDON in 1990.


MEN’s DOUBLES
SIMONE BOLELLI AND FABIO FOGNINI were the defending champions but lost in the second round to ADRIAN MANNARINO AND LUCAS POUILLE. Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares won the title defeating DANIEL NESTOR and RADEK STEPANEK in the Final 2-6, 6-4, 7-5. Australian Hewitt played his final ever professional match in either singles or doubles partnering SAM GROTH the pair lost to jack Sock and Vasek Pospisil in the 3rd round. It was the 1st grand slam doubles win for both men but for Jamie in particular it was a sweet moment that at many stages in his career he thought he might never experience.


Women’s Doubles
Martina Hingis and Sania Mirza defeated Andrea Hlavackova And Lucie Hradecka in the final 7-6 (7-1), 6-3. It was the their 3rd consecutive grand slam title for sania and martina having won the Wimbledon and US open in the 2015 season. In an incredible feat, sania and martina have now extended their unbeaten run to 36 matched winning eight title in a row.


Mixed Double
Martina Hingis and Leander Paed were the defending champion but lost in quarterfinal to sania mirza and IVAN DODIG. ELENA VESNINA AND BRUNO SOARES won the title defeating COCO VANDEWEGHE AND HORIA TECAU in the final 6-4, 4-6, (10-5). BRAZIL’s BRUNO SOARES and Russian partners Elena Vesnina won the Austrlian Open mixed doubles title open mixed doubles title on ROD LAVER ARENA.


88th Annual Academy Awards
SPOTLIGHT film won the Best Picture at the 88th OSCAR AWARDS held in LOS ANGELES on 28 Feb 2018. Spotlight directed by TOM McCarthy. The movie is based on the Boston Globe’s Spotlight team’s investigation into cases of widespread and systemic child sex abuse in the BOSTON area by numerous Roman Catholic priests.
Leonardo Dicaprio finally won his first Oscar as he won the coveted BEST ACTOR AWARD at the 88th Oscar ceremony. This was his 1st Oscar after being nominated 6 times. He won this award for THE REVENANT FILM. He won his Oscar for his portrayal of the character of HUGH CLASS in this film. The film also won the BEST DIRECTOR AWARD for DIRECTOR ALEJANDRO G. INARRITU. This was the 2nd consecutive BEST Director award for ALEJANDRO.
